St George Takes Derby Honours
We were up against a hungry St George side looking to secure their first win of the National Premier Leagues Men’s NSW season at Barton Park, where they defeated us 3-0 in the local derby on Friday night.
The home side made a fast start, capitalising on an early period of dominance to take the lead inside 12 minutes. A misplaced pass from us was pounced on by Sunday Yona, who drove through our retreating defence before picking out Aedan O’Shea. The winger took a sharp first touch and slotted home to put St George ahead.

The next 10 minutes saw both teams share possession and look to create openings, but in the 25th minute, St George threatened again. After a patient build-up, A. O’Shea forced a strong save from our keeper, Danijel Nizic, with a powerful shot from close range.
However, we were unable to prevent St George from doubling their lead shortly after. A loose ball in the air was knocked down by O’Shea and met by Jaden Casella, who flicked it on under pressure. Bai Antoniou anticipated the pass perfectly, finding himself in behind before finishing past Nizic to make it 2-0.
We responded well, creating three good chances in quick succession. Richard Shoueiki forced a strong save from Mackenzie Syron with a low shot across goal, but we couldn't find the breakthrough. Then, just before half-time, St George struck again. A pinpoint cross from Casella found Antoniou at the back post, and he finished clinically to send us into the break trailing 3-0.
We came out with more energy in the second half, determined to get back into the match. We pushed forward with purpose, linking up well in possession and creating promising moments. However, St George remained composed, limiting our clear-cut chances while continuing to pose a threat on the counter.
As the match wore on, we grew into the game, with our technical players combining well in tight spaces. Despite our efforts, St George’s defence held firm, and in the 86th minute, they nearly added a fourth. Casella broke through on goal, but a brilliant last-ditch clearance from Jacob Tresoglavic denied him on the line.
The match ended 3-0—a frustrating result for us, but one we will learn from as we move forward in the season. We’ll be looking to bounce back stronger in our next fixture.
