A LEAGUE GRAND FINAL DAY
Q and A with former Sharks shot stopper Tom Glover on his time in football and thoughts leading in to today’s final with Melbourne City
Hi Tommy
First of all Congratulations on fantastic season and reaching the A-league Grand Final with Melbourne city.
Before we get in to tonight’s clash Just a little background on yourself and your football journey.
What made you decide to be a GK ?
I was actually a striker until I was 10 years old then I played a futsal grand final in goals and we won so my best mate at the time told me to come down to trial with Sutherland sharks and I made the team.
What was your local junior club ?
I had two local teams growing up as a junior. When I was 5 & 6 I played for Bangor then made the move to Menai Hawks with my school mates where I played until the U10s
How long did you spend at the Sharks ? What was it like ?
I spent 5 years at Sutherland Sharks. When I was U14s they gave me the opportunity to be working with the first grade keepers every week and this helped a lot with my development. Without Sutherland sharks and the opportunity they gave me at an early age I wouldn’t be where I am today.
What age did you sign for Spurs and move to the UK ?
My first trial over at Tottenham was a month before my 15th birthday. I went over there for a month trial then came back to Australia awaiting a call back from them and I got it a couple months after my first trial. I then signed my first contract with them when I was 15 and moved over there full time.
What lured you back to Australia and the
A League ?
The opportunity to be playing men’s football week in week out is what brought me back to Australia. I had a couple of opportunities in Europe but Melbourne City was definitely the best suited club for me and I like to think it’s worked out well so far.
What's your time been like at Melbourne City?
Melbourne City has been great. I had to be patient at the start to earn my spot in the team but when I was given the opportunity I took it with both hands and haven’t looked back. The facilities and resources at the club would be up there and if not better than most clubs in Europe.
Hows the confidence going in to the decider on Sunday ?
There is a great confidence going into the final on Sunday. We also know it’s not going to be an easy game as Sydney are a great team with a lot of experience. If we play our style of play and do what we do best we shouldn’t have any problems.
Always a pleasure catching up. We are very grateful for your time in such a busy week. We wish all the very best from everyone at the Sharks.
Good luck
